Vietnam Plan

Zhi-Shan has been assisting children in Central Vietnam for nearly 30 years, and to date has implemented several major service programs. From initially helping one child born with deformities due to the effects of Agent Orange during the Vietnam War to providing free medical corrective surgeries, ensuring children have enough to eat, warm clothing, access to education, and even promoting the joy of reading for the past thirty years, Zhi-Shan has made an impact. Many of the children who were once helped have now returned to help children in their hometowns. We believe that one day those children who once received our support may also be able to help disadvantaged children in countries beyond their borders.

In 1995, Zhi-Shan began assisting orphans and impoverished children in Vietnam, providing emergency supplies such as medicine, clothing, and milk. Since 1998, we have implemented the "Assistance for Impoverished Children" project throughout central Vietnam, spanning six provinces including Quang Tri, Hue, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, and Quang Ngai, providing scholarships, school supplies, books, and more to impoverished children from elementary school to university level.

In 2000, the "Medical Correction Project" was launched to address children severely affected by Agent Orange, causing physical disabilities in limbs or organs, through screening, treatment, surgery, and rehabilitation. Over 3,200 children have been helped to regain health and mobility. In 2004, Zhi-Shan initiated the "Vietnam Childcare Project," collaborating with communities to improve facilities in local kindergartens and provide nutritious meals, benefiting preschool children in remote mountainous or rural areas of central Vietnam, providing them with an environment and opportunity to both eat and learn. The establishment of "Toy Libraries" in 2017 and "Children's Developmental Toy Rehabilitation Centers" in 2021 further enriches our support. To date, Zhi-Shan helps over 200,000 Vietnamese children annually access education and medical resources, transforming their lives.

In 2008,  Zhi-Shan initiated a program to promote reading in Quảng Điền in the rural district of Thừa Thiên Huế province to help children in Vietnam absorb new knowledge, develop skills and confidence through reading, and broaden their horizons to pursue and achieve their dreams. The Reading Plan includes the establishment of friendly reading rooms, providing boxes of books  and various reading materials, training “reading program seed teachers”, distributing reading record booklets, and organizing award ceremonies for children. The foundation continuously absorbs and learns from domestic and international model programs which promote and organize reading activities in partner schools. Over the past 15 years, the project has expanded to six provinces in central Vietnam, including Thua Thien Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, and Quang Nam, creating "friendly reading spaces" and "cultivating interest and good reading habits" for students in over 500 schools. We have provided equipment for 303 friendly reading rooms and established 3,785 classroom bookshelves. The average number of books read by students per academic year is 60, and the program  benefits over 200,000 students. Schools have also incorporated reading classes into their regular curriculum, where children actively read books and even tell stories, significantly improving their expressive abilities and confidence, contributing to the realization of Goal 4  of UN Sustainable Development - "Quality Education."

Starting from 2022, Zhi-Shan has been redirecting resources originally allocated for building early childhood care centers towards establishing toy libraries. Each toy library can serve around 300 children, enabling children to learn and grow through play, safeguarding their right to play and develop.
